The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) took a significant step by signing the Sports for Climate Action framework, solidifying its role as a catalyst for a more environmentally friendly and sustainable Olympic movement. As a non-profit organization serving 206 member National Olympic Committees (NOCs) across the globe, ANOC is deeply committed to fostering unity and collaboration among NOCs, furthering their sustainability initiatives and maturity. ANOC's Sustainability Policy outlines seven strategic objectives, encompassing a wide spectrum of actions, such as quantifying and transparently reporting emissions and integrating sustainability principles into procurement processes. ANOC demonstrates its dedication by striving to decrease emissions by 50% by 2030, utilizing 2019 as the baseline year for assessment, and ultimately attaining a net-zero emissions status by 2040. This pledge underscores a holistic approach that encompasses both efficient emissions reduction strategies and the promotion of sustainable procurement practices.
In 2021
The ANOC General Assembly endorsed a strategic plan extending until 2024, with Sustainability prominently featured as one of its key objectives: "Apply effective sustainability measures to protect the environment and develop good governance practices in all ANOC's projects and activities". Since then, ANOC has worked closely with host NOCs and Local Organizing Committees to deliver carbon-neutral ANOC General Assemblies in Crete in 2021 and Seoul in 2022, achieved through partnerships in greenhouse gas offsetting. ANOC remains dedicated to this sustainability endeavour, with plans to extend this practice to all future ANOC General Assembly events.
A Step Further
Going a step further for the ANOC General Assembly in Cascais, ANOC and the Portuguese Local Organizing Committee (LOC) are deeply committed to implementing greenhouse gas reduction plans and sustainable procurement policies that prioritize not only the materials procured but also their sources. Moreover, a dedicated endeavor will be made to carefully choose three specific United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing and spotlighting them throughout the event with the aim to both increase awareness of these goals and tackle significant global sustainability challenges on a broader scale. This will serve as an exemplary model for all participating partners, showcasing the principles of economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
